Hard to believe it will be 30 years this Wednesday since beloved Beatle John Lennon was murdered. This week his eldest son, Julian Lennon, finally sat down with CNN to discuss his father’s death and the emotions he felt that very dark day.
“When mum arrived we were in bits,” he tells CNN’s John Roberts. He later remembers flying to New York from Britain after he’d received word. “Every person on that plane had the newspaper, you know, dad’s picture, John Lennon slain, murdered.” Read on for the video.
He says he felt a sense of duty to immediately meet up with his 5-year-old step brother, Sean Lennon, who was at the hotel where his dad was murdered. Sadly, Julian compares his father’s death to his father leaving Julian’s family when he was the same age as Sean, reminding us that icons aren’t always perfect.
Here’s the video. The full report will air on CNN on Wednesday.
